Kenmore gas water heater burner cycles on and off rapidly (short cycling)

Safety: Turn gas control to OFF and allow the unit to cool before servicing.

• Clean burner and orifice: Remove the burner assembly and clean with compressed air. Ensure all ports are clear.
• Check flue: Inspect the flue for obstructions and proper draft. Correct any venting issues.
• Thermostat sensing: Ensure the thermostat sensing element (on some models) is properly inserted into the well and making good contact.
• Observe operation: After cleaning, relight and observe burner operation. If short cycling persists, the gas control valve may be defective and should be replaced by a professional.
