Possible Causes
Loose hot/cold nipple connections, failed dielectric nipple, cracked flexible connector, corroded threaded joint
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn OFF power (or gas) and close the cold water supply valve. Allow hot water to cool before working on piping.
- Dry and inspect: Wipe the top of the heater dry and observe where water reappears—at the nipple threads, flex connector, or valve.
- Tighten connections: Use two wrenches to gently tighten the flexible connectors on the hot and cold nipples. Do not twist the nipples in the tank.
- Replace nipples if needed: If leakage persists at the nipple threads, drain water below the top fittings and remove the leaking nipple. Install a new dielectric nipple with pipe thread sealant or Teflon tape rated for potable water.
- Check for cracks: Replace any cracked flexible connectors or fittings.
- Refill and test: Open the cold supply, purge air from a hot faucet, and check for leaks.
