Possible Causes
Stuck or scaled flow sensor, Incorrect piping causing low flow, Failed flow switch, Wiring fault to flow sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power and close water isolation valves before removing any flow sensor or switch. Relieve system pressure.
Steps:
- 1. Verify system flow: Ensure all isolation valves are open and that any system pumps are operating. Low flow can cause the sensor to drop out.
- 2. Clean flow sensor: Remove the flow sensor or flow switch from the piping. Inspect for mineral buildup or debris. Clean gently with a soft brush and vinegar solution if scaled.
- 3. Check wiring: Confirm the flow sensor harness is intact and firmly connected to the control board.
- 4. Test sensor: For a paddle-type flow switch, check continuity across the switch terminals while manually actuating the paddle. For electronic sensors, follow Lochinvar test procedures. Replace if defective.
- 5. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the sensor, restore water and power, and verify that the unit recognizes flow correctly.
