Possible Causes
Magnesium anode rod reacting with sulfur in water, Bacterial growth in tank, Low water usage and stagnation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power or gas and allow the tank to cool before removing the anode rod. Use proper lifting techniques; tanks are heavy.
Steps:
- 1. Flush the tank: Drain several gallons from the tank to remove sediment and stagnant water.
- 2. Disinfect: Follow Lochinvar or plumbing guidelines to shock the tank with a chlorine solution, then flush thoroughly until odor dissipates.
- 3. Replace anode rod: Consider replacing the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc anode rod compatible with Lochinvar tanks, which can reduce odor.
- 4. Increase temperature temporarily: Raising the setpoint to 140°F for a short period (with scald warnings) can help kill bacteria; then return to a safe temperature.
