Possible Causes
Anode rod fully consumed, Aggressive water chemistry, Lack of maintenance inspections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn off power or gas and allow the tank to cool. Relieve pressure by opening a hot water tap before removing the anode.
Steps:
- 1. Inspect anode rod: Remove the anode rod from the top of the tank. If it is less than 1/4 inch thick or heavily pitted, replace it.
- 2. Clean threads and port: Remove rust from the anode port threads and apply pipe sealant to the new anode rod threads.
- 3. Install new anode: Install a Lochinvar-compatible anode rod (magnesium or aluminum/zinc depending on water quality).
- 4. Schedule maintenance: Plan to inspect the anode every 2–3 years to prevent future corrosion.
