Possible Causes
Aged or cracked thermocouple, Loose thermocouple connection at gas control, Pilot flame too small or misdirected, Soot or debris on pilot assembly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Turn gas control knob to OFF and wait several minutes to clear any gas. Follow Lochinvar lighting instructions exactly.
Steps:
- 1. Inspect pilot flame: Relight the pilot per instructions and observe the flame. It should engulf the upper 3/8 inch of the thermocouple. If weak or yellow, clean the pilot orifice and air intake.
- 2. Check thermocouple connection: Ensure the thermocouple nut is snug at the gas control valve. Do not overtighten.
- 3. Replace thermocouple: If the pilot lights but goes out when you release the button, replace the thermocouple with a Lochinvar-compatible part. Route it properly so the tip sits in the pilot flame.
- 4. Test operation: Relight the pilot and verify it stays lit and the burner fires when the thermostat calls for heat.
