Stuck gas control thermostat, Failed tank sensor, Faulty mixing valve, Miscalibrated control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Extremely hot water can cause scalding. Warn occupants and consider shutting off power or gas until the issue is resolved.
Steps:
- 1. Verify setpoint: Check the thermostat dial or digital setpoint and lower it to 120°F. Wait several hours and recheck outlet temperature with a thermometer.
- 2. Test mixing valve: If a thermostatic mixing valve is installed, adjust it to a lower setting and verify that mixed water temperature responds. Replace the valve if it remains too hot.
- 3. Check sensors: On electronic models, test the tank or outlet temperature sensor and replace if out of specification.
- 4. Replace gas control/thermostat: On mechanical gas valves, if water remains excessively hot regardless of dial setting, replace the gas control valve/thermostat assembly with the correct Lochinvar part.
