Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and gas. Do not operate the heater with a suspected venting or fan problem due to carbon monoxide risk.
Steps to check:
- 1. Listen for fan operation: When the unit calls for heat (with covers on and power restored), you should hear the fan start. If silent, power back off and proceed.
- 2. Inspect fan assembly: Remove the upper/front cover to access the draft inducer or blower. Check for debris, insect nests, or rust obstructing the fan wheel. Spin the wheel by hand; it should turn freely.
- 3. Check wiring: Inspect the fan motor harness and any speed sensor wires. Reseat connectors at the motor and control board.
- 4. Test voltage (advanced): With power ON and a call for heat, carefully measure voltage at the fan motor connector (use extreme caution). If proper voltage is present but the fan does not run, replace the fan assembly.
- 5. Replace fan: Disconnect power, remove mounting screws, and replace the fan/blower with the correct Reliance part. Ensure the gasket and vent connections are sealed properly.
Note: After fan replacement, verify proper venting and combustion using manufacturer procedures.
