Possible Causes

Water in base pan triggering leak sensor, Blocked condensate drain line, Failed leak detection sensor, Condensation from cold inlet piping dripping into base

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power. Do not ignore leak-related faults; they can indicate serious water damage risk.

Steps to check:

  • 1. Inspect base pan: Remove the lower access panel and look for standing water in the base of the heater. Use towels or a wet/dry vacuum to remove water.
  • 2. Check condensate drain: For heat pump models, locate the condensate drain line and trap. Clear any clogs and ensure the line slopes downward to a drain.
  • 3. Examine plumbing connections: Inspect cold/hot connections, T&P valve, and drain valve for leaks. Tighten or replace components as needed.
  • 4. Inspect leak sensor: If equipped, locate the leak detection sensor in the base. Ensure it is properly mounted and not corroded. Replace if damaged.
  • 5. Dry thoroughly and reset: After fixing leaks and clearing drains, allow the base to dry completely, then restore power. If F9 returns with no visible water, the sensor or control board may be faulty.

Warning: If the tank itself is leaking (water seeping from the jacket or welds), the entire water heater must be replaced.
