Thermocouple / Flame Sensor Failure
Pilot light will not stay lit on Reliance atmospheric gas water heater

Possible Causes
Weak or failed thermocouple, Dirty pilot orifice causing small flame, Loose thermocouple connection at gas control, Drafts blowing on pilot flame
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn gas control knob to OFF and wait at least 5 minutes to clear any accumulated gas. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid open flames.
Steps to check:
- 1. Observe pilot flame: Relight the pilot per Reliance instructions. The flame should be steady and engulf the upper 3/8–1/2 inch of the thermocouple tip. If the flame is weak or yellow, clean the pilot orifice.
- 2. Clean pilot assembly: Turn gas OFF. Remove the pilot tube from the burner assembly and gently clean the orifice with compressed air. Do not enlarge the orifice with tools.
- 3. Check thermocouple connection: Ensure the thermocouple nut is snug at the gas control valve (finger tight plus about 1/4 turn). Do not overtighten.
- 4. Replace thermocouple: If the pilot lights but goes out when you release the control knob, replace the thermocouple with a Reliance-compatible part. Route the new thermocouple away from burner flames except at the tip.
- 5. Check for drafts: Make sure there are no strong drafts or exhaust fans pulling air across the pilot area.
Warning: If the pilot will not light at all or you smell gas continuously, shut off gas and contact a professional.
