How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the water heater breaker. Verify power is off at the access panel with a non-contact voltage tester.
Steps to check:
- 1. Verify breaker: Check the double-pole breaker for the heater. Reset if tripped. If it trips again, do not force it on; investigate further.
- 2. Reset high-limit: Remove the upper access panel and insulation. Press the red reset button on the upper thermostat firmly until it clicks. Replace insulation and cover.
- 3. Inspect wiring: With power still OFF, check all screw terminals on the upper thermostat and element for tightness and signs of overheating.
- 4. Test voltage (advanced): Restore power and carefully measure voltage at the upper thermostat input and output. If power is present at input but not leaving to the element when calling for heat, replace the upper thermostat.
- 5. Monitor operation: After resetting/replacing, allow several hours for the tank to heat. If the high-limit trips again, check for stuck thermostat or element short to ground.
Warning: Working inside an energized electric water heater can be lethal. If unsure, hire a licensed electrician or technician.
