Possible Causes
Failed overheat cutoff fuse, Severe scale buildup, Blocked water passages, Faulty control board temperature logic
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and gas. Allow the heater to cool completely.
- Visual inspection: Remove the front cover. Locate the overheat cutoff device(s) attached to the heat exchanger. Look for discoloration or signs of overheating.
- Check water flow and scale: Ensure inlet filter is clean and perform a descaling flush if the unit has not been serviced recently.
- Test cutoff (advanced): With power OFF, check continuity across the overheat cutoff. If open and non-resettable, it must be replaced.
- Replace overheat cutoff: Disconnect wiring, remove mounting screws, install the new cutoff in the same position, and reconnect wires.
- If cutoff trips again: There is an underlying overheating issue (scale, flow, or control). Have a technician perform a full diagnostic.
