Possible Causes

Dry-firing element before tank was full, Heavy scale buildup causing localized overheating, Normal wear of element, Voltage mismatch

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester. Allow water to cool.

  • Test elements: Remove access panels and insulation. Disconnect wires from each element and measure resistance with a multimeter. An open circuit indicates a failed element.
  • Drain tank: Close cold inlet, attach a hose to the drain valve, open a hot tap, and drain water below the level of the element.
  • Replace element: Use an element wrench to remove the old element. Clean the opening, install a new Rheem-compatible element with a new gasket, and tighten securely.
  • Refill and purge: Close drain, open cold inlet, and open hot taps until all air is purged and a solid stream of water flows.
  • Restore power: Only after the tank is full, turn the breaker back ON.
