Possible Causes
Clogged pilot orifice, Weak thermocouple or thermopile, Insufficient combustion air, Faulty gas control valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn gas control to OFF and wait several minutes before attempting to relight. If you smell gas, ventilate and call your gas supplier.
- Follow lighting instructions: Use the exact procedure on the Rheem label for lighting the pilot.
- Clean pilot assembly: Turn gas OFF, remove the burner assembly, and clean the pilot orifice with compressed air. Do not enlarge the orifice.
- Check thermocouple/thermopile: Ensure the pilot flame fully engulfs the sensor tip. If the pilot goes out when you release the knob, the thermocouple/thermopile may be weak and should be replaced.
- Inspect air intake: Clean lint and dust from the combustion air openings at the base of the heater.
- If problem persists: The gas control valve may be defective and should be replaced by a qualified technician.
