Rheem water heater causes water hammer or banging noises in pipes when heating or shutting off

Possible Causes
Fast-closing valves, High water pressure, Lack of water hammer arrestors, Thermal expansion
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Sudden pipe movement can cause leaks. Inspect exposed piping for damage.
- Check pressure: Measure water pressure; if above 80 psi, install or adjust a pressure-reducing valve.
- Install arrestors: Add water hammer arrestors near quick-closing valves (dishwasher, washing machine) and near the water heater if needed.
- Add expansion tank: On closed systems, install a thermal expansion tank on the cold inlet to absorb expansion.
- Secure piping: Strap and cushion loose pipes to prevent banging.
