Possible Causes
Thermostat stuck on causing overheating, High household water pressure, No thermal expansion tank on closed system, Faulty T&P valve
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: The T&P valve is a critical safety device. Do not cap or plug the discharge pipe.
- Measure pressure: Use a pressure gauge on a nearby faucet to check static water pressure. If above 80 psi, install or service a pressure-reducing valve and expansion tank.
- Check temperature: Run hot water and measure temperature. If above 140°F with normal thermostat setting, the thermostat or gas control valve may be faulty and should be replaced.
- Test T&P valve: Lift the test lever briefly to flush debris, then release. If it continues to drip, replace the T&P valve with a Rheem-approved valve of the same rating.
- Install expansion tank: On closed systems, add a properly sized thermal expansion tank on the cold inlet to absorb expansion.
