Possible Causes
Failed electronic thermostat, Loose wiring to upper element, Tripped ECO (energy cut-off) switch, Faulty control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester that the heater is de-energized before removing access panels.
- Access upper control: Remove the upper access panel and insulation to expose the thermostat/control board.
- Check ECO reset: Press the red reset button (ECO) firmly until it clicks. If it was tripped, this may restore operation.
- Inspect wiring: Tighten any loose screw terminals on the thermostat and element. Look for burnt or discolored wires and replace if damaged.
- Test upper element: With wires removed and power OFF, measure resistance across the upper heating element terminals. Replace the element if open.
- Replace thermostat/control: If the element is good and ECO is not tripping repeatedly, replace the upper thermostat or electronic control module with a Richmond-compatible part.
