Possible Causes
Burned-out lower heating element, Failed lower thermostat, Loose wiring at lower element, Sediment covering lower element
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and verify no voltage at the heater. Water in the tank may be hot—use caution.
- Access lower controls: Remove the lower access panel and insulation to expose the lower thermostat and element.
- Inspect wiring: Tighten all screw terminals and look for burnt insulation. Repair or replace damaged wires.
- Test lower element: Disconnect wires from the lower element and measure resistance with a multimeter. A very high or infinite reading indicates a failed element that must be replaced.
- Check for sediment: Drain several gallons from the tank through the drain valve. If heavy sediment is present, fully drain and flush the tank before installing a new element.
- Replace thermostat if needed: If the element is good but E1T persists, replace the lower thermostat with a Richmond-approved part.
