Possible Causes

Failed tank temperature sensor, Loose sensor harness, Sensor shorted by moisture, Faulty electronic control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker. Some sensors are in contact with hot water—allow the tank to cool if necessary.

  • Locate sensor: On electronic models, find the tank temperature sensor(s) inserted into wells on the tank or attached to the surface.
  • Inspect wiring: Check the sensor harness for damage or loose connectors at the control board. Reseat connectors.
  • Check for moisture: Look for leaks around sensor wells or grommets. Repair leaks and dry connectors thoroughly.
  • Test sensor: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to Richmond's temperature/resistance chart. Replace the sensor if out of range.
  • Control replacement: If a new sensor does not clear E3T, the electronic control board may need replacement.
