Possible Causes
Burned-out lower element, Failed lower thermostat, Heavy sediment covering lower element, Broken dip tube
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker. Tank water may be hot—open a hot tap to relieve pressure.
- Test lower element: Remove the lower access panel and insulation. Disconnect wires from the lower element and measure resistance. Replace if open.
- Check for sediment: Drain the tank fully and inspect the removed lower element. If it is buried in scale, flush the tank thoroughly and install a new element.
- Test lower thermostat: With power OFF, check continuity through the lower thermostat when calling for heat. Replace if it does not close properly.
- Dip tube inspection: If elements and thermostats are good, inspect and replace the cold water dip tube if it is cracked or shortened.
