Possible Causes
Thermostat set too low, Sediment buildup reducing capacity, Partially clogged burner, Dip tube deterioration causing mixing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: For gas models, turn the gas control to the pilot setting before working near the burner. Water may be hot—use caution.
- Adjust thermostat: Increase the temperature setting slightly on the gas control (do not exceed 120°F for safety unless necessary and local codes allow).
- Check for sediment: Attach a hose to the drain valve and flush several gallons from the tank until water runs clear. Heavy sediment can reduce effective capacity.
- Inspect burner flame: The burner flame should be mostly blue with minimal yellow tipping. If mostly yellow or lazy, clean the burner and air intake openings.
- Dip tube check: If hot water runs out quickly and cold mixes in, the cold water dip tube may be broken. Replacement requires removing the cold inlet nipple and installing a new Richmond-compatible dip tube.
