Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Treat this as a potential flammable vapor event. Remove ignition sources and ventilate the area.
- Step 1 – Remove vapor sources: Relocate gasoline, paint thinners, and other flammables away from the heater.
- Step 2 – Clean air intake screen: Vacuum dust and lint from the base of the heater and combustion air openings.
- Step 3 – Attempt reset per label: Follow the Ruud lighting and reset instructions on the heater. Some models require a specific sequence to clear lockout.
- Step 4 – Replace FVS: If lockout persists, replace the OEM Ruud flammable vapor sensor as described in the FVS procedure.
If the status light pattern remains after sensor replacement, the gas control valve/thermostat may need replacement by a professional.
