Possible Causes
Tripped circuit breaker, Tripped ECO (high limit reset) on upper thermostat, Loose wiring at junction box, Failed upper thermostat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester before opening any covers.
- Step 1 – Check breaker: Inspect the electrical panel and reset any tripped double-pole breaker feeding the Ruud heater.
- Step 2 – Access upper thermostat: Remove the upper access panel and insulation. Press the red reset button (ECO) on the upper thermostat firmly until it clicks.
- Step 3 – Inspect wiring: Check wire connections at the heater junction box and thermostat terminals for looseness or burning. Tighten as needed.
- Step 4 – Test operation: Restore power and wait 1–2 hours. If hot water returns but the ECO trips again, a thermostat or element may be faulty.
- Step 5 – Replace upper thermostat: With power OFF, label and move wires from the old thermostat to a new OEM Ruud-compatible thermostat one at a time. Secure it against the tank and reinstall insulation and cover.
If breakers continue to trip, contact an electrician or technician to check for wiring or element shorts.
