Possible Causes
Failed lower heating element, Faulty lower thermostat, Heavy sediment buildup around lower element, Incorrect thermostat calibration
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker. Verify with a tester before touching wiring.
- Step 1 – Verify thermostat settings: Ensure both upper and lower thermostats are set to the same temperature.
- Step 2 – Test lower element (advanced): With power OFF and wires removed, measure resistance across the lower element. Replace if open or shorted to ground.
- Step 3 – Drain and inspect for sediment: Attach a hose to the drain valve, turn OFF cold supply, and drain the tank. Flush until water runs clear to remove sediment.
- Step 4 – Replace lower element and/or thermostat: Remove the lower element with an element wrench and install a new OEM Ruud-compatible element and gasket. Replace the lower thermostat if it does not switch properly when tested.
Refill the tank completely and purge air from hot faucets before restoring power to avoid dry-firing the element.
