Possible Causes

Failed upper heating element, Stuck upper thermostat, Incorrect wiring after previous repair, Sediment covering lower element

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and verify no voltage at the element terminals before proceeding. Water may be hot; use caution.

  • Step 1 – Check temperature settings: Remove both access panels and verify both thermostats are set to the same temperature (typically 120°F/49°C).
  • Step 2 – Test upper element (advanced): With power OFF and wires removed from the element, measure resistance across the upper element terminals. An open circuit indicates a bad element.
  • Step 3 – Replace upper element: Turn OFF cold water supply and attach a hose to the drain valve. Drain water below the upper element level. Remove the element with an element wrench and install a new OEM Ruud-compatible element with a new gasket. Refill and purge air before restoring power.

If you are not comfortable testing elements, a technician can quickly diagnose and replace the faulty component.
