Possible Causes
Faulty igniter, Dirty flame sensor, Failed gas valve, Blocked pilot orifice
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and gas. If you smell gas, evacuate and call your gas supplier.
- Step 1 – Observe ignition sequence: Restore power and set the thermostat to call for heat. Watch through the sight glass: blower starts, then igniter should glow or spark, then gas should ignite.
- Step 2 – Clean flame sensor/igniter: Turn power and gas OFF. Remove the burner assembly. Clean the flame sensor and igniter with fine emery cloth. Check for cracks or damage.
- Step 3 – Check wiring: Ensure all burner and igniter wires are firmly connected to the control module.
- Step 4 – Replace igniter/flame sensor assembly: If cleaning does not help, install a new OEM Ruud igniter/flame sensor assembly.
If the burner still does not light, the gas valve or control module may be defective and should be serviced by a technician.
