Possible Causes
Heavy mineral sediment at bottom of tank, Overheated lower element (electric), High hardness water with no maintenance, Partially blocked dip tube
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power or set gas control to PILOT. Allow water to cool before draining.
- Step 1 – Flush tank: Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and run it to a floor drain. Open the drain valve and a hot water faucet to allow air in. Flush until water runs clear.
- Step 2 – Power flush (if needed): Briefly open the cold supply valve with the drain open to stir up sediment, then flush again.
- Step 3 – Inspect anode and dip tube (advanced): Remove the anode rod and dip tube to check for deterioration or blockage. Replace with OEM Ruud parts if needed.
- Step 4 – Consider water treatment: In hard water areas, install a softener or schedule regular flushing to reduce sediment buildup.
Persistent loud noises after thorough flushing may indicate severe internal scaling or tank damage, in which case replacement may be the best option.
