Possible Causes
Thermostat set too high or malfunctioning, Closed system with no expansion tank, High incoming water pressure, Faulty T&P valve seat
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: The T&P valve is a critical safety device. Never cap, plug, or disable it. Hot discharge can cause burns.
- Step 1 – Check temperature setting: Ensure the water heater is set to about 120°F/49°C. Overheating can cause T&P discharge.
- Step 2 – Check system pressure: Have water pressure measured; if above 80 psi, install or service a pressure-reducing valve.
- Step 3 – Install/inspect expansion tank: In closed plumbing systems, a thermal expansion tank is required. Verify one is installed near the Ruud heater and properly pressurized.
- Step 4 – Replace T&P valve: If the valve continues to drip at normal temperature and pressure, replace it with a properly rated T&P valve. Turn OFF power/gas and water, relieve pressure, remove the old valve, and install the new one with approved sealant. Reconnect the discharge pipe.
If discharge is heavy or continuous, shut down the heater and call a professional immediately.
