Water heater emits a smell of gas around the appliance

Safety first: Immediately turn off the gas supply at the main shut-off valve. Do not operate electrical switches, do not smoke, and ventilate the area. If the smell is strong, evacuate and call emergency gas services.

Steps (only if smell is very slight and you are competent):

• Leak detection: Use an approved leak detection spray or soapy water on visible gas joints around the Saunier Duval gas valve and inlet pipe. Bubbles indicate a leak.
• Tighten joints: Gently tighten leaking compression joints. Do not overtighten.
• Professional repair: Any persistent leak, or leak from the gas valve body itself, requires replacement of components by a certified gas technician.

Warning: Never use a naked flame to search for gas leaks. If in doubt, do not attempt repairs yourself.
