Possible Causes
Cross-connection between hot and cold lines, Thermostatic mixing valve set too low, Partially closed gas shutoff valve, Incorrect gas pressure or undersized gas line
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not exceed safe outlet temperatures (typically 120°F/49°C for general use). Gas pressure adjustments must be done by a licensed technician.
Steps:
- 1. Verify set temperature: Check the Takagi remote and ensure the setpoint is at the desired temperature (e.g., 120–125°F).
- 2. Check for mixing valve: If a thermostatic mixing valve is installed near the heater, adjust it slightly hotter and test. Follow manufacturer instructions.
- 3. Test for cross-connection: Turn OFF the cold water supply to the heater. Open a hot tap; if water still flows strongly, there is a cross-connection allowing cold water into the hot line, which must be corrected by a plumber.
- 4. Gas supply: Ensure the manual gas valve is fully open. If the heater was recently installed or converted (NG/LP), have a technician verify gas line sizing and pressure.
