Possible Causes
Failed expansion tank, Overfilled system, Faulty relief valve, Excessive temperature due to control fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Warning: Discharged water can be very hot. Do not cap or plug the relief valve outlet.
- 1. Check system pressure: Read the pressure gauge when the system is hot. If it approaches or exceeds the relief valve rating (often 30 psi), investigate expansion tank and fill valve.
- 2. Expansion tank: Test and recharge or replace a waterlogged expansion tank as described in overpressure troubleshooting.
- 3. Verify temperature: Ensure the boiler is not exceeding its design temperature. If the control is overshooting, a sensor or control fault may exist.
- 4. Replace relief valve: If pressure and temperature are normal but the valve continues to drip, the valve seat may be fouled. Have a technician replace the relief valve with the correct rating.
