Possible Causes
Corroded tank shell, Leaking relief valve, Loose or corroded pipe fittings, Failed gasket at sensor or element port
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and, if necessary, close the cold water supply to the heater. Hot water can cause burns; avoid direct contact.
- Identify leak source: Dry the area and observe where water first appears: from fittings, relief valve, tank seam, or sensor wells.
- Check relief valve discharge: If water is coming from the temperature and pressure relief valve discharge pipe, the system may be over-pressurized or overheating. Do not cap this pipe.
- Tighten fittings: For minor seepage at threaded connections, gently tighten with appropriate tools. Do not overtighten and crack fittings.
- Replace faulty components: Leaking relief valves, gaskets, or nipples should be replaced. If water is seeping from the tank body or welds, the tank is likely failed and must be replaced.
