How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power to the water heater at the breaker. For gas models, also turn the gas control knob to OFF and close the gas shutoff valve.
Steps to check:
- Verify the dedicated circuit breaker is not tripped. Reset it once if needed.
- Remove the access panel to the control area (usually upper front on electric, front lower on gas). Inspect the main control board for burnt spots, bulged components, or a burnt smell.
- Check all harness connectors to the control board (thermostats, elements, gas valve, sensors) for loose or corroded pins. Reseat each connector firmly.
- If F01 returns immediately after power-up and wiring is intact, the control board is likely defective.
Replacement guidance:
- Order the correct Whirlpool OEM control board using the full model and serial number from the rating plate.
- Label each connector before removal, then transfer wires one-by-one to the new board.
- Reassemble, restore power (and gas if applicable), and run the startup/diagnostic procedure per the service manual.
Warning: Do not attempt board-level repairs (soldering components) unless you are qualified. Incorrect repair can cause fire or shock hazards.
