Possible Causes

Open heating element, tripped manual reset limit, loose wiring at element terminals, failed element relay on control board

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester at the access panel.

Element and limit checks:

  • Remove upper and lower access covers and insulation to expose the elements and thermostats.
  • Press the red reset button on the upper limit switch if present.
  • Disconnect wires from each heating element and measure resistance across the element terminals. Typical values are 10–20Ω depending on wattage and voltage. An open (OL) reading indicates a failed element.
  • Inspect element terminals for signs of burning or melted insulation. Tighten loose screws.

Control checks:

  • With power restored (only if qualified), measure voltage at the element terminals when the unit calls for heat. If no voltage is present but the control indicates heating, the relay or control board may be defective.

Corrective actions:

  • Replace any open or shorted heating elements with Whirlpool OEM elements of the same wattage and length.
  • Replace a failed high-limit or control board if it is not sending power to the elements.

Warning: Never work on live circuits unless you are trained. Always recheck for power before touching conductors.
