Possible Causes
Water in drain pan contacting leak sensor, faulty or wet leak sensor, condensation dripping into pan, plumbing leak above heater
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and close the cold water supply valve to the heater.
Leak inspection:
- Check the drain pan under the heater for standing water.
- Inspect all visible plumbing connections above and around the heater (cold inlet, hot outlet, T&P valve, unions, flex connectors) for drips.
- Dry the leak sensor and pan completely with towels or a wet/dry vacuum.
If a leak is found:
- Repair or replace the leaking fitting, valve, or pipe before restoring power.
- If the tank itself is leaking from the shell or bottom, the water heater must be replaced.
If no leak is found:
- Check for condensate from cold water lines dripping into the pan and insulate pipes if needed.
- Replace a faulty leak sensor if it continues to indicate water when dry.
