Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and close the cold water supply. Do not cap or plug the T&P discharge line.
Inspection:
- Inspect the T&P valve and discharge pipe for signs of recent discharge (water stains, moisture).
- Verify the discharge line is not blocked and terminates safely.
- If equipped with a T&P sensor or switch, inspect wiring and connections.
If the T&P valve is leaking or lifting:
- Check system water pressure with a gauge; install or service an expansion tank if pressure is high.
- Replace a faulty T&P valve with the correct temperature/pressure rating.
If only the sensor is faulty:
- Replace the T&P monitoring sensor or switch per Whirlpool instructions.
Warning: Never block or disable the T&P valve. It is a critical safety device.
