Water heater leaks from top around inlet/outlet connections
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Loose dielectric nipples, failed flex connector, cracked solder joint, deteriorated thread sealant
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power or gas and close the cold water supply valve. Open a hot faucet to relieve pressure.
Steps:
- Dry the top of the heater and observe where water reappears.
- Tighten flex connectors and fittings carefully; do not overtighten plastic-lined nipples.
- If threads are leaking, disconnect, clean, and reassemble with new Teflon tape or approved pipe dope.
- Replace any cracked flex connectors or fittings.
Note: If water is seeping from under the top cover or insulation, the tank itself may be leaking and require replacement.
