Possible Causes
Stuck valve piston, Defective drive motor, Jammed cam gear, Broken motor harness or connector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the AFWFilters softener from power and close the inlet water valve before opening the control head.
- Power reset: Disconnect power for 5 minutes, then plug back in and attempt to start a manual regeneration. If ERR1 returns, continue.
- Check for mechanical jam: Remove the control valve cover. Inspect the main piston and cam gear assembly for debris, resin beads, or scale buildup. Gently rotate the cam by hand (with power off). If it will not move, the piston or seals may be swollen or damaged.
- Inspect drive motor: Locate the drive motor on the control valve. Check that the motor mounting screws are tight and that the motor shaft engages the cam gear. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion or loose pins. Reseat the connector.
- Lubricate seals: If the piston is stiff but not damaged, apply a small amount of food-grade silicone grease to the piston seals and spacers, then reassemble.
- Test operation: Restore water and power. Initiate a manual regeneration and observe whether the cam indexes smoothly through cycles.
- Replace parts if needed: If the motor hums but does not turn, or the cam does not move at all, replace the drive motor. If the piston is scored, cracked, or swollen, replace the piston and seal kit.
