Possible Causes
Faulty valve position switch, Damaged cam encoder wheel, Loose or broken position sensor wiring, Control board input failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the softener and close the inlet valve before servicing the control head.
- Visual inspection: Remove the control valve cover. Locate the position switch or encoder (often mounted near the cam gear). Check for broken plastic tabs, misalignment, or contamination with salt or moisture.
- Check wiring: Inspect the small harness from the position switch to the control board. Look for pinched wires, corrosion at the connector, or broken conductors. Reseat the connector firmly.
- Clean encoder area: If there is dust, salt, or debris on the encoder wheel or sensor, gently clean with a dry, soft brush. Do not use water or solvents on the electronics.
- Manual cam test: With power off, rotate the cam through its full travel and ensure the position switch actuates (you may hear faint clicks). If the switch does not actuate or feels loose, replace it.
- Power test: Restore power and attempt a manual regeneration. If ERR2 persists after cleaning and reseating, the position switch or encoder assembly should be replaced. If a new switch does not resolve the error, the control board may be defective and require replacement.
