Possible Causes

Stripped cam gear, Seized piston, Failed drive motor, Obstructed valve body with debris or resin

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Immediately place the unit in BYPASS to restore water to the home, then unplug the softener.

  • Inspect drive assembly: Remove the control valve cover and examine the cam gear and motor. Look for broken teeth, loose set screws, or a motor that is hot and not turning.
  • Check piston movement: With power off, attempt to rotate the cam by hand. If it will not move, remove the piston and seal assembly and inspect for swelling, scoring, or foreign material.
  • Clean valve body: Flush any resin beads or debris from the valve body. Replace the piston and seal kit if damaged.
  • Replace motor or cam: If the motor does not run when powered or the cam gear is stripped, replace the defective component with AFWFilters-compatible parts.
  • Test: Reassemble, take the unit out of bypass, and run a full manual regeneration to confirm proper indexing.
