Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the softener and close the inlet valve. Place the unit in bypass and relieve pressure by opening a softener-fed faucet.
Clean the injector/venturi assembly:
- Locate the injector: On AO Smith valves, the injector (venturi) is usually under a small cover on the side or top of the control valve, held by screws.
- Disassemble carefully: Remove the screws and lift off the injector cover. Note the order of gaskets, screens, and nozzles.
- Clean components: Soak the injector nozzle, throat, and screens in warm water with a small amount of vinegar to dissolve iron and mineral buildup. Use a soft brush or toothpick to clear small orifices—do not enlarge them.
- Inspect seals: Check O-rings and gaskets for swelling, cracks, or flattening. Replace if damaged.
- Check brine line: Follow the brine hose from the valve to the brine well in the salt tank. Ensure there are no kinks, blockages, or air leaks at fittings.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall the injector assembly, restore water and power, and start a manual regeneration. During brine draw, the brine level in the tank should slowly drop.
If brine still does not draw: The brine valve assembly or internal seals in the control valve may be worn and require replacement.
