Possible Causes

Low water level in brine tank, Clogged brine refill flow control, Leaking brine line fittings, Stuck brine float limiting refill

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the unit before working inside the brine tank.

Check brine tank water level:

  • After a regeneration, there should be a specific water level in the brine tank (refer to AO Smith manual). If the tank is nearly dry, the unit may not be refilling properly.
  • Inspect the brine float assembly in the brine well. Ensure it moves freely up and down and is not stuck in the closed position.

Inspect brine refill components:

  • Follow the brine line from the valve to the brine well. Check for kinks, cracks, or loose fittings.
  • At the valve, locate the brine refill flow control (small orifice or button). Remove and clean it of debris or iron buildup.

Manual test:

  • Place the unit into a manual regeneration and observe the brine tank during the refill stage. Confirm that water is entering the tank and rising to the expected level.

If water does not enter the brine tank during refill, replace the brine refill flow control or the entire brine valve assembly as needed.
