Rapid Valve Shifts / High Flow Rate Shock
Softener causes water hammer or banging pipes when it changes cycles.

Possible Causes
High household water pressure, Fast-acting valve without arrestors, Undersized plumbing, Loose pipe supports
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: High water pressure can be dangerous. If you suspect very high pressure, contact a plumber.
Check water pressure:
- Use a pressure gauge on a hose bib to measure static pressure. Ideal is 40–60 psi; above 80 psi requires a pressure-reducing valve.
Mitigate hammer:
- Install water hammer arrestors near quick-closing valves (e.g., washing machine, dishwasher) and/or near the softener.
- Secure loose pipes with proper clamps and supports.
- If pressure is high, have a plumber install or adjust a pressure-reducing valve.
The softener valve itself usually does not require replacement; addressing system pressure and plumbing support typically resolves the issue.
