Possible Causes

Worn rotor/seal pack, Cracked valve body, Loose plumbing fittings, O-ring failure at tank neck

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Immediately place the softener in bypass and shut off the inlet valve if necessary. Unplug the unit. Mop up any standing water to prevent slip hazards.

Locate the leak source:

  • Dry the area and observe where water reappears: at plumbing connections, tank neck, or valve seams.
  • Tighten any loose threaded fittings carefully; do not overtighten plastic.

Internal valve leaks:

  • If water seeps from the seam between the valve head and tank, the tank O-ring or internal rotor/seal pack may be failing.
  • Depressurize the system, remove the valve head per AO Smith instructions, and inspect/replace the tank O-ring and rotor and seal kit.

If the valve body itself is cracked, the entire control valve head must be replaced.
