Safety first: Isolate the softener using the bypass and unplug it. Mop up spills promptly.

• Inspect tank walls and base: Look for visible cracks or splits, especially near the bottom and around fittings.
• Check brine line grommet: Ensure the brine line where it enters the tank is properly sealed with a grommet and not loose.
• Examine brine well: Remove the brine well cover and check for cracks or mis-seated components that could allow overflow.
• Correct overfill issues: If the tank has recently overfilled, address the brine valve and float issues as described in the overfill entry.
• Replace tank if cracked: A cracked brine tank generally must be replaced; patching is rarely reliable.
