Possible Causes
Corrupted control program, Failed internal memory on BWT control board, Power surge damage, Incorrect time/date settings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before opening the control housing.
- Check time and date: Enter the BWT menu and verify that the current time, date, and regeneration schedule are correctly set. Correct any errors and save settings.
- Factory reset: Perform a factory reset of the controller following the BWT service manual. Re-enter hardness, capacity, and regeneration parameters.
- Inspect for surge damage: Remove the control panel cover and visually inspect the PCB for burn marks, swollen capacitors, or corrosion. If present, the board is likely damaged.
- Use surge protection: If the unit is connected without surge protection, consider adding a surge-protected outlet or power strip to prevent future issues.
- Power-cycle: Unplug for 2–3 minutes, then reconnect and observe if E5 clears.
If E5 returns after reset and reprogramming, the BWT control board is likely defective and should be replaced.
