Possible Causes

Blocked Cillit outlet check valve, Fouled outlet strainer, Collapsed resin bed blocking outlet, Partially closed outlet isolation valve

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Isolate the softener and relieve pressure before disconnecting outlet fittings.

  • Verify valves: Confirm the outlet isolation valve and any downstream service valves are fully open.
  • Check outlet strainer/check valve: Many Cillit valves incorporate a check valve or strainer on the outlet. Remove the outlet union, extract the check valve cartridge or strainer, and clean off debris. Replace damaged springs or seals.
  • Bypass test: Place the Cillit bypass in bypass mode. If water flow is restored to the house, the blockage is within the softener, not the plumbing.
  • Resin bed check: If flow through the softener remains very low, the resin bed may be fouled or collapsed. This typically requires removing the control head and inspecting the top of the resin bed and the Cillit riser tube and bottom distributor for blockage.
  • Professional service: Severe internal blockages or resin collapse usually require media replacement and internal valve cleaning by a qualified technician.
