Possible Causes
Obstructed drain line from Crystal Quest control valve, Clogged drain flow control, Excessive backpressure on drain, Internal valve piston/seal drag causing slow movement
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power, close inlet, and place the unit in bypass. Open a faucet to relieve pressure.
- Inspect drain line: Follow the drain hose from the control valve to the discharge point. Ensure it is not kinked, elevated too high, or submerged in standing water. Correct any routing issues.
- Check drain flow control: Remove the drain line fitting at the valve and locate the drain flow control (small orifice). Clean any debris or scale with a soft brush and vinegar.
- Verify flow: With the unit still in bypass but power restored, briefly place the valve into backwash and slowly open the bypass to confirm strong flow from the drain port. Immediately close if leaks occur.
- Inspect piston/seals: If flow is good but E04 persists, the piston may be dragging. Rebuild the valve with a Crystal Quest piston and seal/spacer kit.
- Final test: Restore normal plumbing, run a full regeneration, and confirm the unit returns to service without error.
