Possible Causes
Anaerobic bacteria growth in Crystal Quest brine tank, Iron or sulfur bacteria in well water, Long periods of stagnation in softener, Inadequate sanitization after installation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Use caution when handling bleach or sanitizing chemicals. Follow Crystal Quest and local guidelines.
- Bypass temporarily: Bypass the softener and flush plumbing with unsoftened water to reduce odor.
- Sanitize brine tank: Empty the brine tank of salt and sludge. Clean with a mild bleach solution, rinse thoroughly, and refill with fresh salt.
- Sanitize resin tank: Follow Crystal Quest instructions to sanitize the resin bed using an approved disinfectant (often a measured amount of household bleach added to the brine well before regeneration).
- Address source water: If sulfur odor persists in raw water, consider adding a dedicated Crystal Quest sulfur/iron filter upstream of the softener.
