Possible Causes

Stuck valve cam, Defective drive motor, Broken motor harness, Jammed piston/seal pack

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the softener or switch off the dedicated breaker before opening the control head. Shut off the inlet water and place the unit in bypass to relieve pressure.

Step-by-step:

  • Inspect the valve cam and piston: Remove the front cover of the Culligan control valve. Look at the large plastic cam and piston assembly. Check for obvious binding, broken teeth, or debris. Manually rotate the cam slightly (with power off) to see if it is seized.
  • Check the drive motor: Restore power briefly and initiate a manual regeneration. Watch the motor on the side of the valve. If it hums but does not turn, or does not move at all, the motor may be failed. Power back off after testing.
  • Inspect wiring: Verify the motor harness is fully seated on the control board and motor terminals. Look for pinched or corroded wires.
  • Free a jammed piston: If the piston is stuck, remove the retaining screws on the valve cover, gently pull the piston/seal pack straight out, clean any iron or scale, lubricate O-rings with silicone grease, and reinstall.
  • Test again: Restore water, take the unit out of bypass, plug in power, and start a manual regeneration. If Err 1 returns immediately, the motor or control board is likely defective and should be replaced.

When to stop: If you hear grinding, see cracked cam parts, or are not comfortable disassembling the valve, stop and contact a Culligan technician.
